Department welcomes new faculty member

The Medicinal Chemistry Department is pleased to announce the addition of a new faculty member, Steven Bloom. Bloom will start his position this fall as an assistant professor of Assistant Professor of Medicinal Chemistry Steven Bloommedicinal chemistry. Bloom graduated with honors in Chemistry and Biochemistry from McDaniel College in western Maryland in 2010, and completed his Ph.D. in chemistry at the Johns Hopkins University in 2015.  At Hopkins he was a Gary H. Posner Fellow (2012-2013) and an Owens Fellow (2013-2014), and worked with Professor Thomas Lectka in the areas of catalysis in many of its forms including asymmetric-, organo-, transition metal-, hydrogen atom transfer-, and photoredox-catalysis).  He also worked on the development of novel chemical procedures for the selective introduction of fluorine into small molecules. Most recently, Bloom held an NIH (Ruth L. Kirschstein) Postdoctoral Fellowship at Princeton University in the research group of Professor David MacMillan. His research at Princeton University involved the development of photoredox catalysis as an innovative platform for site-selective bio-conjugation of native peptides, proteins, and antibodies.
